Richard Clark has extensive experience as a surface water hydrologist specialising in water resources assessment. Over the past 15 years he been a major influence in the establishment of a new generation of water systems based on the harvesting, use (and, where appropriate, re-use) of urban stormwater. He was the winner of the competition for the design of a water system for the original MFP housing development at New Haven Village and has gone on to develop his ideas in projects at Mawson lakes, Parafield Airport, Morphettville racecourse and many more.

Richard Clark and Associates are the owners/developers of the WaterCress water systems simulation model which has been used extensively in South Australia for water resource assessment and water systems design. The key to the economic and efficient design of the systems with which he has been involved lies in the unique ability of the model to investigate the performance of systems which may access multiple sources of water at different scales (eg roof and catchment runoff, groundwater, mains water, treated wastewater), deliver separate potable and non-potable quality supplies to multiple demands and also provide a range of additional benefits in water quality improvement, flood reduction and amenity. The model has been developed to have particular application to wetland and aquifer storage and recovery systems.

Richard mainly works as a specialist systems modeller in multi-disciplinary teams of planners, water treatment experts, hydrogeologists and/or environmentalists. While the WaterCress model was initially developed for urban situations it has equal applicability in rural situations, particularly with respect to environmental flows, farm dams and integrated surface and groundwater operations.

Richard’s extensive experience is recognised by invitations to provide policy advice and critiques to high level agency reviews on many aspects of urban and rural water management.
