Stormwater09 is a joint Victoria and NSW Stormwater Industry initiative in Albury-Wodonga in July next year.

SIAV Awards for Stormwater Excellence 2008

Each year SIAV recognises Victorian achievement in the field of stormwater management through its annual awards program.


The 2008 Awards Program is now open

Stormwater Industry Association is the multi-disciplinary advocate for the stormwater industry.

With membership from a wide range of disciplines, SIAV aims to promote the use of innovative and sustainable practices, standards and policies that minimise environmental, social and economic impacts.

The awards program recognises Victorian excellence in research, innovation, education and application in the development of best practice for the management of stormwater.


Award Categories & Descriptions
Nominations are invited from individuals and organisations for Victorian projects in the following categories:

1. Stormwater Management / Initiatives
This award recognises projects which can improve the efficiency of operation of urban stormwater systems serving one or more objectives compatible with Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) through attention to any of the areas or stages of endeavour necessary to reach the outcomes.

The award is open to any consultant, local or other government body, private organisation or individual.

Entries should demonstrate:
  • Description on the organisational, public or private issues involved
  • Improvement to one or more stormwater management outcomes compatible with WSUD
  • Efficiencies achieved through inclusion of WSUD
  • Achievement of project milestones and objectives
  • Completion in a realistic time frame
  • Effectiveness of reducing the impact of development on the total water cycle
  • An ability to integrate, engage and move the community, organisation, and business
  • Contributions to knowledge, methods, technology or regulations
  • Efficiencies achieved with performance data on flows and water qualities
  • Costs and benefits to all parties
  • Benefits to the local community


2. Innovation in Surface and/or Ground Water Management
This award recognises structural measures that enhances the performance of a stormwater quality treatment train within a catchment and reduces unsustainable impacts on supporting ecosystems through specific attention to the incorporation and operation of appropriate design criteria.

The award is open to any consultant, government body, private organisation or individual.

Entries should demonstrate:
  • Innovative use of water sensitive urban design element/s
  • Description of the project and its major performance objectives
  • Key data relevant to the objectives
  • Description of the design concepts and any innovations
  • Simplicity in application, cost effectiveness and retrofitting
  • Benefits to water conservation, water quality improvement, or flood mitigation
  • Awareness of the impact of the development on the total water cycle
  • Benefits in terms of capital cost, operating costs, health, safety, and convenience
  • Rationalisation of performance, flow and water quality data
  • Completion or near completion of project


3. Stormwater Research
This award recognises research projects, including software development, that have produced data, knowledge and wisdom as related to stormwater and water systems. This category can include detailed quantification and review of existing works.

The award is open to any research organisation, consultant, government body, private organisation or individual.

Entries should demonstrate:
  • Description of the nature of the problem to be overcome
  • Contribution to knowledge, methods, technology or regulation in managing stormwater quantity, quality, drain design, or flood mitigation
  • Improved stormwater design and rationalisation practice
  • Presentation of the good and bad features of the project
  • Benefits in terms of health, safety, convenience, aesthetics and quality of urban living.


4. Stormwater Education
This award recognises the provision of a public or private program, courses, lectures or manuscripts which enthuse, enlighten and advance awareness of urban living and stormwater flows that influence knowledge, attitudes and behaviour toward water within broad or particular groups.

The award is open to individuals, groups or organisations.

Entries should demonstrate:
  • The communication of accurate information at a level of detail appropriate to the target audience
  • Direct or potential benefits to one or more of water conservation, use, reuse, recycling, stormwater quality, flood mitigation, or water management efficiency
  • Description of the target audience and the objectives of the program
  • Structure of the program, mode of delivery, materials and aids
  • Capital and operating costs of the program


5. Stormwater Harvest and Reuse
This award recognises projects which demonstrate stormwater harvest and reuse which benefits the general community whilst contributing positively to the environment and sustainability.

Entries should demonstrate:
  • Description of the project and it’s major performance objectives
  • Benefits to the local and wider community
  • Costs and benefits to all parties
  • Contribution to sustainability
  • Benefits to water conservation, water quality improvement, or flood mitigation
  • Benefits in terms of capital cost, operating costs, health, safety, and convenience
  • Completion or near completion of project


Eligibility Criteria
  • Nominations must be Victorian-based projects and be completed at the close of the submission period*.
    *  For categories 2 and 5 where the beneficial outcomes of a Project cannot be effectively demonstrate,
        the judges may consider the submission on the expected outcomes using professional judgment.


Award Selection & Presentation
  • All judging of nominations will be by a panel appointed by Stormwater Victoria.
  • The decision of the judges is final.
  • Awards will be given for winning entries or merit, deemed appropriate by the judges.
  • Presentations will be made to award winners at the Stormwater Victoria Annual Awards Dinner on 11 September 2008.


General Assessment Criteria for all Awards Categories
Entries should demonstrate appropriate elements of award criteria and where applicable the following general criteria:
  • Impacts of the project on the water cycle, greenhouse gases and local and regional eco-systems
  • Benefit to the community, aesthetics and quality of living


General Lodgement Requirements

Hardcopy submission:
Each submission must be received in triplicate (3 copies of) and must be formatted to include:
  • Cover page: please ensure the front cover of each entry clearly states:
  • Project name or submission title
  • The Award category
  • The name(s) to be used on the certificate
Submission:
Each submission must clearly address the requirements for the award category and the general assessment.
  • Maximum of 20 pages of text and graphics only.
  • Supporting documentation for the written submission may be submitted.
Supporting digital data:
A CD MUST be provided with hardcopy submissions, including:
  • An electronic copy of the “Summary of project” description (100 words maximum)
  • 3 digital images which may be used in the audio visual presentation at the Awards dinner, and may also be used for SIAV promotional purposes. The images must be of high resolution and must be saved in jpeg or gif file formats. The images must be clearly named to identify the project.

Nomination fee (inclusive of GST):
  • $100 Stormwater Victoria (SIAV) members
  • $220 non-members (includes individual membership for nominating person)
  • $ 30 students and non-profit organisations


Award Rules and Conditions of Entry

Conditions for nominations
A separate nomination form must be completed for each project, product or program entered. The same project cannot be nominated in more than one category. All applicable sections of the nomination form must be completed. Nominations withdrawn after the closing date are not entitled to a refund. If the project is nominated for a category for which it does not qualify, the Stormwater Victoria (SIAV) reserves the right to move the project to an appropriate category, in consultation with the nominating individual or organisation. Judges reserve the right to decline to present an award in a particular category if the required standard of excellence has not been reached. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. Nominations including submitted material become the property of the SIAV and will NOT be returned.

Publicity and warranties
The nominating individual or organisation:
  1. Warrants that the details of its nomination are correct in every respect;
  2. Warrants that the nomination has the client’s consent (if the client is not the nominating organisation);
  3. Warrants that the subject matter of the nomination and material included with or as part of the nomination (such as plans and photographs) does not infringe copyright or any other intellectual property right;
  4. Indemnifies SIAV against such infringements;
  5. Grants to SIAV an irrevocable license to use the subject matter of the nomination and material included with, or as part of, the nomination for any purpose in connection with the promotion of the SIA and SIAV and its awards programs; and
  6. Agrees to state the category, type or recognition received and the year awarded, whenever disclosing information or promoting itself or the nomination in any communications media, as a finalist or winner in the SIAV Awards.
SIAV and its associated media will only publish the name of the nominating organisation, client or individual, category and location of the winning projects. All other submitted information will remain confidential.

Disqualification
SIAV reserves the right to disqualify a nomination before, during or after the contest judging, official announcement of winners and awards presentation if SIAV determines that:
  1. The nomination or the nominating organisation or individual breaches or otherwise fails to meet/observe any of the above stated eligibility or competition requirements;
  2. SIAV considers that false or misleading information is intentionally provided;
  3. Problems or discrepancies arise between or among nominating organisations or individuals, designers and clients which SIAV considers cannot be amicably resolved by the parties involved within a reasonable time; or
  4. The project has not reached practical completion by the advertised closing date for nominations.
In the case of disqualification after the awards ceremony, the nominating organisation or individual will be required to return the award and a public announcement may be made by the Association.

Disclosure
The nominating organisation or individual agrees that any media comment in any communications media and photographic display of any of the nominated projects, programs or products will be at the discretion of SIAV and its associated media. SIAV and its associated media accept no responsibility for any incorrect details, spelling or other incorrect information in the nomination form.
